The Aurora Borealis is an astonishing spectacle across the polar night sky, and there is no better place to admire it than our private basecamp on Mellavaara hill, offering unobstructed views to the north.

We begin the journey with a relaxed 20-25 minutes hike up to the hilltop. Then, we’ll gather inside a cozy, kota hut to light a campfire, while observing the night sky. In the meanwhile. your guide prepares traditional Finnish crêpes (muurinpohjalettu) over the open flame.

Once the Northern Lights appear, you will be amazed by their vibrant colors and movement across the sky. Otherwise, the pristine, star-filled arctic sky is an experience in itself. Should the Northern Lights fail to appear, you are welcome to rejoin the hike the following day, free of charge.

    Show up at your resort transfer meeting point 10 min prior to the scheduled start. Regrettably, we cannot wait if you are late for the departure. 

    What to bring

    • Layered, warm winter clothing 

    • Warm boots and socks suitable for cold weather

    Special requirements

    • Children must be properly bundled up for winter conditions and accompanied by an adult at all times

    • Please note that there are no toilet facilities available at the wilderness camp

    • Pets are not allowed during the experience 

    • Participation is not allowed under the influence of alcohol or drugs
