Rovaniemi in November: 6 reasons to stay at Halo Igloos
November is a quieter month in Rovaniemi. The nights grow longer every week, and the first snow usually settles on the forest before the Christmas season begins in December. For us, it's one of the loveliest times of year at Halo Igloos.
November at a glance
Autumn turns into winter over the course of the month, so the first and last weeks can feel quite different. This is roughly what to expect:
Daylight shrinks from about seven and a half hours on 1 November to less than four by the 30th.
Temperatures usually stay between −6 °C and −1 °C, though colder days are very common (even -20 degrees).
The first snow normally falls during the month and tends to stay for good from late November or early December.
The long nights give the Northern Lights plenty of time to appear.
It's calmer than December, when the Christmas season fills the town.
1. You can watch the Northern Lights from bed
With so little daylight, November evenings start early and last a long time. That's good news if you're hoping to see the aurora. The catch is the weather: November is more changeable than later in winter, and cloud can come and go several times in one night.
This is where a glass roof helps. Every Halo igloo has a heated panoramic roof, so you don't need to stand outside waiting for a gap in the clouds. You can stay under the duvet and look up when the sky clears. If the lights appear while you're at dinner or in the sauna, our aurora alert will let you know. It's about as close as you can get to having the Arctic sky all to yourself.
2. A sauna and hot tub of your own for the cold nights
Most November days sit somewhere between −6 °C and −1 °C, but it doesn't always stay that mild. Last November Lapland had frosty days of −20 °C and colder.
Nights like that are cold, but they're often the clearest ones too. Every Halo igloo has its own sauna and outdoor hot tub, so warming up is only a few steps away. Go from the sauna straight into the hot tub and watch the sky while you thaw out.
3. Plenty to do while the snow settles
Some of our activities take place right at the resort, and most don't depend on deep snow. In November you can join:
Halo Sky Odyssey, a unique stargazing evening hosted by a professional astronomer with a deep-space telescope
Halo Sky Exhibition at the Arctic Sky Deck, open daily from 10:30 to 16:00
Aurora Basecamp Hike, an evening hike up to our hilltop kota for crêpes by the campfire
Hillside Husky Trek, a forest hike with our Siberian huskies
Riverside Sauna with Cold Plunge, a traditional Finnish sauna with dips in the river
Wellness activities such as yoga, sound healing and archaic drumming
Our reindeer reside also at Halo Igloos in November, and every igloo has two pairs of snowshoes for when the snow arrives. Staying with us also means 10% off all of these activities, so it's easy to fit a few into your days.
4. It's quieter than December
December is the busiest month in Rovaniemi. In November there's more room on the trails and a wider choice of dates. We often describe Halo as north enough to slow down, and this is the month when that feels most true.
5. Two resorts, a kilometre apart
Both resorts offer premium glass igloos, each with a private sauna, an outdoor hot tub and a heated glass roof. In November, breakfast and dinner are always included in your stay.
HALO IGLOOS HILLSIDE
26 adults-only igloos of 21 m², each for up to two guests
Set among the pines around our reindeer enclosure
Restaurant Tokka, a lounge and bar, the Reindeer Hut and a glass kota
Suited to couples and solo travellers
HALO IGLOOS RIVERSIDE
Our newest resort, beside the Vikaköngäs River
39 family-friendly igloos of 23.5 m², each for up to four guests (three adults at most)
Restaurant Vuolle, a lounge and bar, the riverside sauna complex, gym and the Arctic Sky Deck
Hiking trails that start right outside, which makes it good for friends and families as well as couples
6. It feels remote, but it's easy to get here
From Rovaniemi Airport it's about 15 minutes by car, and the town centre is around 18 minutes away. Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Circle are 10 km down the road, and in November our daily shuttle runs between both resorts and town. This is what we mean by Arctic wilderness in complete comfort: you get the nature and the silence without a long drive at either end of your trip.

What the weather is really like
Every November is a bit different. Some years stay mild and grey well into the month, and others turn wintry early. Last November was one of the colder ones, with below-average temperatures in Lapland and a lot of fresh snow in a few days.
Snow normally starts falling in November, although it has arrived as early as October and as late as December. It usually settles for the winter in late November or early December.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see the Northern Lights from my igloo?
Yes. Every Halo igloo has a heated panoramic glass roof, so you can watch the sky from your bed whenever it is clear. Our aurora alert lets you know when the lights appear.
Is there snow in Rovaniemi in November?
Usually, yes. The first permanent snow-cover lasting throughout the winter typically arrives in November, but conditions vary from year to year.
How cold is it in Rovaniemi in November?
Usually between about −6 °C and −1 °C, but cold spells happen. Last November, temperatures in Lapland dropped to −20 °C and below on some clear days. Your igloo, sauna and hot tub are always warm.

Which Halo resort should I choose?
Halo Hillside suits couples and solo travellers looking for an intimate stay among the pines. Halo Riverside, our new resort by the Vikaköngäs River, is a lovely choice for families and friends travelling together.
